In Selinitsa
Selinitsa is not a location for people who want vast sandy beaches, modern hotels, night clubs or discos.
That's not to say that it hasn't anything to offer, it just means that the whole lifestyle is very
relaxed and unsophisticated. It does have accomodation, some available all year round, tavernas, bars and gift shops.
Location of Selinitsa
The southern land mass of Greece is called
the Peloponese, and in the south has three "fingers". Where the western and central fingers join is the city of Kalamata. The central finger is formed by the Taygetos mountain
chain and has been called the "Mani" for over 1100 years. About halfway to the southern tip of this peninsula from Kalamata is where you will find Selinitsa.
Selinitsa has a small natural harbour; the land behind the village being one of the few flat areas in the region. Originally the villagers were mostly fishermen, and even today there are still several boats to be seen
Agios Nikolaos was inhabited in the beginning of the 19th century. The village is
located by the sea in one of the few flat areas of the region. The first people ever
lived in Agios Nikolaos were fishermen. They were making their living by exchanging their
products (fish) with agricultural products supplied by other villagers of the area, like
olive-oil, wheat etc. That explains why the first houses were built so close to the natural
harbor of the village were the fishermen of Agios Nikolaos used to anchor their boats. By
the years the fishermen enlarged the little physical harbor to a safer place for their boats
especially against the winter storms. The new harbor served in the 1930's small crafts, which
were the only mean of transport for 13 villages of the region to Kalamata.
